Electrical goods stores in Manhattan

Coming over from England and looking to buy a tablet computer eg. Archos or Sony tablet 16gb. Are there any decent shops you can recommend. We are staying in Midtown.

You can find these types of things at any Best Buy shop (www.bestbuy.com) or J&R close to City Hall (www.jr.com).

Whatever you do, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy electronics from small souvenir shops in touristy areas.

They are ALL SCAMS.

They usually sell cameras, phones, mp3 players, GPS/SatNav, etc, alongside the NYC postcards, t-shirts, snowglobes, baseball hats and other tchatchkes.

They are all "bait and switch" operations, selling broken or no-name items, luring you in with "too good to be true" prices on iPods, Droids and Nikon cameras in the display cases.

As was said, stick to these:

J&R Electronics

B&H Photo and Video (closed Friday afternoons and Saturdays)

Adorama (also closed Friday afternoons and Saturdays)

Best Buy (a national chain)

Heck, I'd even go to Staples, Office Max or Office Depot.

B&H is a great place to shop. You can check out their website before you go.

Bear in mind if you're going for electronics, most warranties are US only, and on expensive items like tablets, you could get clobbered for 20% VAT when you get back into the UK making the item more expensive than buying one in the UK in the first place.
