There's also some sort of thing in the Sony building - lots of school groups are always lined up to get in to whatever it is.

I think there's a Children's Art Museum somewhere

Central Park Zoo

all sorts of classes they can take for a day (with or without you)

the UN? the Intrepid? Eately? (my younger nephew is obsessed with Food and HGTV)

Highline park?

I think Sony wonder works is still there.

They are probably too young for the Concorde tour at intrepid museum.

Toys r us

Fao Schwarz

Boating in central park

ESPN play zone in times sq

Staten island ferry

Ny water taxi is option to circle line

Maybe even Macys.

Have a great time

The Lego store at Rockerfeller centre , get a bucket and fill it with your own selection of lego , for less than $10.00

Just around the corner is FDNY firezone , meet real FDNY fire fighters , try on the jackets , play on the firetruck , try and find your local fire dept. on the patch wall ( they have them from all over the world ), hear real radio calls , they also do a smal fire safety show , even if your kids know there drills it is still a good show.

Roosevelt island tramway / gondela beside the Queensborough bridge , all included in the price of your subway card .

If they're boys, the Intrepid Air & Space Museum and don't forget Spiderman on Broadway!

My daughter is six. Here's what we like to do on a weekend, other than hang out at the local playgrounds.

* Children's Museum of the Arts, which she calls "Kids Make Art!" - not a regular museum, more a building stuffed with interactive art projects. http://www.cmany.org/

* New York Hall of Science. Always lots to see here. http://www.nysci.org/

* FAO Schwarz, there are stations to play with the toys, and then you can walk past the horses at Central Park across the street and burn off energy at the playground at 62nd and 6th

* Battery Park City has two great playgrounds, Shake Shack, an awesome gelato place in the World Financial Center, grass to run on by the river, a nice little public library, and a high-quality toy store; we tend to make an afternoon of that

* In the summer, Long Beach (for the beach) or Coney Island (for the amusement park and acquarium)

I agree with all the above, plus:

Shows: Mary Poppins, Gazillion Bubble Show, Freckleface Strawberry.

Playgrounds, esp. in Battery Park City, Central Park, Washington Square Park.

And in August, you can always enjoy some a/c inside a movie theater!

I always leave a reason to go back. Been going for over 20 years now. Still so much to see and do.
