Valentine's Day 2012

Are there any special or unique things happening in the city this year for Valentine's Day?

(Aside from Valentine's Day themed hotel or restaurant deals etc)

A manager of one of the good Midtown chocolate shops (not the kind that have sweatshirts and coin banks for sale) told me today they are planning to hire a bouncer for Valentine's Day.

Not a bad idea at all, I can imagine how ridiculous it will get

I'd be happy if someone acknowledged the day by sending a card.

vjp - Awesome!!

This is from my NFT newsletter. Note: not all of them are ON February 14. Many of these events are throughout the week.

We put the call out to see what everyone was up to for Valentine's Day. Here's some of what we heard:

@schlagerparade mentions a "Half-price morning flick at the 68th St. AMC, lunch at Grey's Papaya, champagne and chocolate fondue at home in the evening." Wait, I didn't realize AMC had cheap tickets! (It's true -- $6 before noon everyday!)

QueensKickshaw is holding its first Food Artisan Market on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and also an Un-Valentine's Day celebration on Wednesday, February 15 featuring a love-haiku contest (this coming on the heels of their Super Bowl Sunday Spelling Bee; so contrarian!)

Some say Valentine's Day is wasted on the youth. OK, maybe we mangled that a little, but speaking of one's inner child, "New York's number one cold cereal buffet and cartoon party for adults" is taking place at the Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg, Saturday, February 11 at 12 noon. As far as infantilizing activities go, this one seems likely to be more fun than a spelling bee, that's for sure -- or at least a lot less embarrassing for those of us who can't live without AutoCorrect.

Love Really Bites In Brooklyn On Valentine's Day: Fast forward to your teen years -- and singles, be aware, this place will be filled with folks who are perhaps only a little drunk, and maybe only slightly damaged -- at the Love Bites Power Ballad Sing-A-Long at Union Hall. This event is bring-your-own-lighter.

Meanwhile, over at Brooklyn Bowl on Valentine's Day, the Love Bites! Power Ballad Tribute Show is also taking place on the 14th: "No Date Required, Lighters Will Be Provided."

But if I were single, I'd be singing along over at the Bell House on Valentine's Day, where they're hosting Unloveable, the Smiths/Morrissey Valentine's Day featuring tribute band The Sons & Heirs.

Elsewhere in singles activities, there's the Broken Hearted Ball on Saturday, February 11 at Matchless in Greenpoint; First two hours are breakup songs, second two hours of songs are for you to break out the make out.

Also for your single friends, "sexual psychologist and music therapist" Dr. Alex Schiller's Never Sleep Alone at Joe's Pub is a hoot, and could be the single greatest Valentine's event for single people. Remember, sit in the "Singles" section if you are single and willing to mingle . . .

Then there's the Got No Valentine Poetry Showcase and Open Mic at the Nuyorican: Tell or listen to tales of unrequited love (or be perverse and take a date!) . . .

And then there's plain old T&A, er, burlesque.

For couples, BAM's Valentine's Day Dinner and a Movie event is featuring Ernst Lubitsch's The Shop Around the Corner, which sounds suspiciously similar to You've Got Mail. Just saying. (A certain surly new mother we know who has been laughing too much at Up All Night quips, "Leave it to BAM to offer a delightfully old farty option for your NPR-listening valentine.")

Meanwhile, the Natural History Museum is doing Valentine's Day in the Hayden Planetarium, where they'll have a cocktail hour with an open bar, champagne, chocolates, passed hors d'oeuvres and romantical music after which guests are invited (whether or not they know one another) to sit back, hold hands and enjoy some of the greatest romance stories of all time. Surly new mother quips, "This being the site of my first date with my now-husband, I'd gladly be here if I weren't the mother of a newborn."

Need a relationship litmus test? See how your new love takes to spending the holiday at a Jersey Shore of the mind at the Pacha Valentine's Day Party with DJ Pauly D.

And for a slightly unconventional restaurant meal, you could also try romancing your date amid boxes of pasta and cans of sauce at Eataly where they'll be dimming the lights, lighting the candles and accepting reservations for special prix fixe meals.

And if you find your serotonin levels a little depleted after the 14th, try the Valentine's Day Hangover edition of Naked Girls Reading on Wednesday, February 15 at Under St. Mark's.

Let me know if anyone goes to any of these!!
