taxi vs train back to JFK

We are a family of 4 with one carry on each traveling on a weekday on a 6:50 PM flight. We are staying at 230 W.54th street - what time should we leave the city to go to JFK? Cab vs train & cost. If train, best route to take to JFK. Thanks for any advice.

The time you should leave depends on what time you want to get to the airport -- and you haven't told us what that is.

So how about you clue us in: what time do you want to get to JFK?

We are taking a domestic flight - is 2hrs enough time with security - 4:30 PM at the airport too early? If we take the train - is that commute time & gets crowded? thanks again for any help.

That IS just about the time the trains get crowded. But a cab will keep you stuck in traffic 2 hrs before the flight is about the normal amount of time recommended

For me, it would depend on the age of the kids. If they are little, I'd hire a car or take a cab. If they are older, and one parent is assigned to one kid (in case you are separated), then I'd take the train, crowds and all.

It's not difficult to get separated from your group in the surge of people getting on the trains. Hold fast to your assigned child and you should be fine..:)

I would take the E subway....nothing could be easier....

cost; about 2.25$ each for the subway (unless your kids are small, or included in a 7 day unlimited card) and 5$ each on the Airtrain....

You can get the E train very near your hotel. The 7th Avenue station is at 7th Avenue and 53rd Street.

If you decide you'd prefer to take the Long Island Rail Road, you'd just take the E in the opposite direction (downtown rather than toward Queens) and get the LIRR at Penn Station.

To get to JFK at 4:30, you could leave your hotel at about 3:15, and take the E train from Seventh Avenue/53rd Street. The train will not be too crowded then, and the trip to Sutphin Boulevard in Jamaica will take 30 minutes. Go upstairs at Sutphin Boulevard into the LIRR station and take the AirTrain to your terminal.

It depends on which airline you are flying. If it is American Airlines or jetBlue you don't really have to be there that far in advance. Security at those two terminals (they're new and they're built to accommodate modern security procedures) is fast and efficient.

Virgin America departs from Terminal 4 where things are also fast and efficient but I always allow an extra 5 minutes for Terminal 4 during the evening hours - it is mostly international departures and that is peak time.

The Delta terminal is the biggest challenge. The terminal was built many decades ago and Delta's idea of a remodel is they changed some carpet. Allow at least 90 minutes for the disaster that is the Delta terminal.

The location you've given is just steps from the 7th Avenue station on the E train. Simply walk to the 7th Avenue station (there is an entrance on Broadway and 53rd Street) and head downstairs for the Queens-bound E train in the direction of Jamaica Center.

Get off the train at the 2nd to last stop - Sutphin / Archer / LIRR / JFK Airport. Do not stay on the train until the last stop. This is all very well-marked and very user-friendly.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.
