live music venues

hello everyone! We're a young couple (23) looking for some recommendations for small/medium sized bars/venues with live music.

Open to almost all types of music, just looking for somewhere quietish with a nice atmosphere to sit and listen to some music with a pint.

all comments welcome

Many thanks for these - exactly the sort of things we were looking for!

We're staying at the Hotel Belleclaire on West 77th Street and we were thinking we will probably need to get the subway to the venues - is it advisable to get the subway reasonably late at night?

It's advisable to ride the subway, whether at a reasonable or unreasonable hour. Doesn't matter. It's always crowded, 24-7

You're welcome:-) You won't have a problem with the subway at any hour! You have the #1 subway practically at your doorstep at both 79th Street and 72nd Street on Broadway..the 72nd Street stop also services the express #2 and #3 trains as well;-) FWIW, you can even walk to the venues mentioned that are uptown from there..or take the M104 bus right across the Street from your hotel..will take you barely 10 min;-) Keep enjoyin'!

Not a bad idea either to check out LiveNation.com's website, they're the ticket vendor for lots of shows/venues ranging from small clubs to big arenas. You can look up the NYC area by date and see who's playing and where.
