Air Train from JFK to Times Square

I have been reading about Air Train - seems a very convenient way to get from JFK...but would really really appreciate some help with working out what we need to connect with (and where) in order to arrive at Times Square.

We will land at JFK at 07:20 on a Wednesday morning in June.

AirTrain connects with 2 types of trains into the city, subway and Long Island Rail Road. To get to Times Square, take the Airtrain to the Jamaica station for the E train (subway)and get out at Port Authority bus terminal. 42 st & 8th ave. Very close to TS.

Pros of this-cheap $7/person, reasonably quick. Big negative you may have to climb stairs with luggage AND at that hour, you're going to be travelling with daily commuters. These trains are not organized for lugggage.

Other option is AirTrain to the same Jamaica station but take the Long Island Railroad (commuter train) into Manhattan. Slightly more comfortable, less likely to need to climb stairs (escalators). But at that hour you'll still be traveling with commuters and may not get a seat. ~ $12/person. Some say the trip is faster on the LIRR. NOW, you're at Penn Station (34 st) and you're still 10 blocks away from Times Square so you need a subway ride or a taxi.

Rereading my answer, just to clarify, the Port Authority bus terminal is a stop on the E train also known as 42 st & 8 th ave.

There are also shuttle buses from JFK that go to Port Authority. A bit easier b/c you don't have to change or lug cases, but you'll get caught in traffic at that hour. HOWEVER, I'd imagine the buses can use the bus lanes so may not be too bad. $15/person. On that bus, for another few dollars you can also get a lift to your hotel door. If you do that, they usually have you get out at Grand Central terminal and get another shuttle from there.

So, after all is said and done, is it just about as cheap (and a lot easier) just to get a taxi from JFK to a Times Square hotel? Especially if there are 2 of you and if it is during the morning rush hour? (we are arriving at JFK at 5:30 a.m. on a thursday in May)

No mom, a taxi is $55-60 ($45 plus toll and tip) while the trains/bus options are $7-17/person or $14-34 for 2.
