Jazz club suggestions please!

My husband and I are looking for a good jazz club to go to on a Wednesday night (the 9th of May to be specific). We are staying in Long Island City but we don't mind if we need to take the subway somewhere else in the city. We would like to grab a meal at the club as well as some drinks. We would prefer some place that does not have a costly cover charge (travelling on a budget) but we also understand that some of the best known clubs are going to have this expense. We wouldn't mind a 'hidden gem' as long as it is not in a really dodgy area.

There aren't any "dodgy" areas anymore.

Do you not care what sort of jazz, who is playing? etc?

You can look at TimeOut New York on line to see who is playing where.

There is a tiny little club in the village called "Smalls" - nothing fancy at all but good price for a cover charge and very intimate:

There's the Jazz Standard, one of my personal favorite clubs - it is below a very good restaurant Blue Smoke. You can order food from the restaurant while at the club - but, there is a cover charge:

There is my long time favorite, the Village Vanguard, which has been in the village for about 70 plus years (can't recall exact date right now):

I wouldn't recommend The Blue Note - very overpriced and you get crammed in like sardines. Horrible place to enjoy music.

I haven't been to it because the venue doesn't appeal to me personally but a lot of people have raved about it here and elsewhere.

These are just a few - TimeOut will give you more of the options and, importantly, tell you who is playing where and when.

Fat Cat Jazz schedule - http://www.fatcatmusic.org/music4.html $3 cover, if you decide a meal first, jazz and drinks later. This is one of the cheaper options and tends to get a big college crowd although that might be finals week.

Here's another list - http://www.gothamjazz.com/listings/05/9/2012/

Hola.

Our favorite spot for drinks, food and music is still the “Iridium” at 1650 Broadway (51st. St.) even though our long-time favorite, Les Paul, is no longer with us earthly creatures. It is a NYC institution. Here is the calendar:

Hope this helps. Your questions are always welcome.

Matt

I second the recommendation for Smalls - great place, and there's a couch in the corner if you get there early enough.

Also consider Cleopatra's Needle on the Upper West Side. No cover, $10 minimum for drinks. Look at their web site to catch their current schedule. Very informal place, more of a diner with music rather than a jazz club that happens to serve drinks.

The Garage on 7th, in the Village, is a restaurant and has continuous jazz performances - not all name bands, just good jazz and fairly decent food......

Really enjoyed Birdland, but $10 head cover charge on top of ticket price. As for prices once in it depends what you think is expensive.. a round of drinks (2 mojotos and 2 soft drinks) and 3 plates of what I would describe as snacks with tip came to $100. To me that's a lot, but we aren't city dwellers and I expect others' opinions may differ. Jazz was great though!!

No one has mentined Smoke yet. It is a supper club type establishment, but it also has a bar you can sit at and not order food. There is usually no cover charge during the week, but there is often a $20 minimum at the tables. Check their website to see who is playing on the date you are going and if there is a cover. They are located uptown on Broadway between 105th and 106th.

also, pretty sure there's no food at Smalls, actually i'm not sure there are even any tables, but Smalls is in the Villages so plenty of places around it to eat. They also are the type of bar that wouldn't mind if you brought your own food in.
