Road trip New York-Niagara Falls-Washington-Atlantic City

Hi

We are 4 adults which are planning a road trip. We'll arrive 30 of June and leave again on the 19 of July - leaving us with 19 full days.

Our preliminary schedule can be seen below. We are going to rent a car when we leave New York. Comments on the itinerary would be appreciated. Is the allocation of days reasonably ? Any ideas to scenery, countryside worth visiting from New York to Niagara Falls and again from Niagara Falls to Washington? Other comments would be appreciated as well?

New York City from 30/6 to 5/7

- 6 Days Sightseeing

Travel from New York City to Niagara Falls from 6/7-7/7

- Any suggestions to scenery, countryside worth visiting along the way?

Niagara Falls from 8/7 -9/7

- See Waterfall, hiking etc.

Travel from Niagara Falls to Washington City on 10/7

- Long driving day. (is it worth stopping somewhere along the way and spending an extra day?)

Washington City from 11/7 - 14/7

- 4 days Sightseeing

Travel from Washington to Atlantic City on 15/7

- Drive and relax at beach in Atlantic City

Atlantic City from 16/7 - 18/7

- Explore Atlantic City and relax at beach

Fly home from New Ark on 19/7

I would have done this differently..

Start in Washington, DC (not Washington City)..then Atlantic City..Then Niagra Falls..Then NYC. Maybe a stop in Ithaca,NY on the day of the long drive from AC to NF..??

Hard to recommend stops along the way without knowing your own interests.

If your reason for Atlantic City is only to relax at the beach then I would choose another location. AC is primarily gambling and IMHO not very nice. There are better places for the beach.

1 vote for Finger Lakes Wine Country on the way to/from Niagara.

Or the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, NY if you like baseball.

Hershey Chocolate factory in Hershey PA would be a great stop on the way to DC.

Thanks for the replies - they are all very helpful.

After a bit of research we are considering the following options:

Day 6-7 From NYC to Niagara Falls

- Shopping at Woodbury Shopping Mall

- Visit the Catskill Mountains

- Visit Ithaca and see Cornell University

- Watkins Glen State Park

- Letchworth State Park

Our preference here is scenery/nature and maybe some short day hikes. is it possible to combine these places in 2/3 days or which of the places would you prefer (Is some of the sights redundant?)

Day 15/18 - Atlantic City

If we were to skip Atlantic City and instead find a place where we can relax at the beach which place would you recommend ?

Strictly for relaxing, I like Long Beach Island..If you want a boardwalk and rides and stuff, I'd look at Wildwood or Ocean City, NJ

It would be a bit of a detour, but the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania has white water rafting and other sights. I've gone mountain biking in the area.

Just a clarification, the white water rafting would not be in the Lehigh Valley per se (which is the Allentown, Bethlehem-Easton area,) but further north of off route 80 near Jim Thorpe and White Haven

Atlantic City NJ is quite tragic. Atlantic City has fake opulence (the casinos) masking abject poverty. There are few places you'll find blight and the depth of poverty in America quite like Atlantic City.

Cape May to the south is quite charming - very beautiful and a wonderful place to spend some time relaxing on the Jersey Shore. Cape May is fairly quiet and relaxed whereas some of the Jersey Shore locations a little further north are much busier / even more commercial. Most of the Jersey Shore from Long Branch (commuter territory) south to Cape May is quite nice (with the exception of Atlantic City).

We love Cape May,but you should investigate it to be sure it is what you want. It is at the southern tip of New Jersey.

Most of the older part of town is registered as a National Historic District. It has the largest collection of Victorian homes in one concentrated area on the east coast.

There are many Band B's ranging from homey to opulent. There are also many newer motels on the beachfront.

Cape May probably has the best selection of fine dining restaurants on the Jeresey Shore, except possibly for Atlantic City. There is an interesting shopping district centered around the Washington Street Pedestrian Mall. Virtually no chain restaurants or stores.

There is very little nightlife.

There is also a bird sanctuary west of town, although you are not coming during its most active time (fall and spring migrations)

Dolphins congregate around Cape May and you should be able to see them from the beach most days. There are a couple companies that run boart excursions to see Dolphins and whales (whale sightings are fairly uncommon in Summer, however.

If this appeals to you you may want ot investigate further.

We're 4 adults, too, and we're going to go on june. We've thought take this route: New York (1day) -Philadelphia(1day)- Washington(1day)- Niagara Falls(2day)- New York(2day). But we don't know if necesary to do it with a tour agency, or if it's easy to do it by ourselves.
