Car Hire for New York-Cape Cod-New York trip

We will be travelling from 34th St in Manhattan to Cape Cod then back to JFK this summer. Any suggestions as to where to pick up and drop off a car?

How many of you are there? How much luggage do you have? Are you looking for easiest or cheapest? If you're coming back to JFK, and don't plan to spend any time in New York City on the back half of your trip, JFK is an obvious place to pick up the car on your way out of town. You could also consider taking a train or bus to Boston and picking up a car for the Cape Cod portion of your trip, then coming back again on public transport. It may well be cheaper than renting in New York CIty.

If you decide to take the train, which should make for a much less stressful trip, I think you'd be much better off taking the train to Providence, Rhode Island, rather than Boston. It's closer to Cape Cod, should have less traffic than leaving Boston and might have cheaper rental cars.

It's been awhile, but I know there at least used to be rental cars available just a short walk from the Providence train station. All New York to Boston trains will stop in Providence.

If you pick up at National car rental at there location on 142 e. 31st St. then drop off at their location at JFK Airport it would probably be the most convienent for you-but it depends on where on 34th St you are-

often most major companies will let you pick up in the city and drop at the airport later with no extra drop charge but make sure because sometimes the drop in a different place can be significant.

bilmin09 makes a valid point-

You should also think of the value that you will be willing to pay to return at the airport (instead of the original city location).

I would say if it cost more than $100 to return at the airport instead of in the same the city location...

then it may be worth it to just call a car service (or take a cab from the original city location).

Since you will have your bags w/ you - You will have to pay a car service/cab $55 + toll and tip = @$70usd to get to the airport from the city location.

Also the hassle of driving into the original Manhattan location and calling a car/cab is worth something as well- so you can determinine the amount of difference you will accept for same location vs airport drop off.

If you can get it free- hey, all the better-but in most cases they will probably charge something extra for different location vs same location drop off.

use priceline , or expedia and ck out the prices of car rental by JFK, and u can search also based on a location like manhattan. get GPS.

remember u always pay more if u pick up and drop off the car at a different location.
