What is happening in Times Square

We visited Times Square yesterday and we were surprised to find the addition of a lane for bikes, and a sidewalk cafe area planted with trees in containers creating a pedestrian zone. Plus Disney characters and even a ballet troupe. Whatever it is, it was wonderful and def added to the experience. Just wondering what the plan is for this area.

That is the plan. The Disneyfication of the area means there are only tourists that mill around.

The plan is to ban all tourists and turn it into a locals only area--- sort of like the plan to ban tourists from Salem on Halloween

Although I find TS pretty nauseating on the whole, was it better as a dangerous, porn, drugs and vice dominated area?

In the depths of New York City's problems in the 70s, could such a transformation have been even remotely envisaged?

Though it could have gone in a different, arguably better direction than Disneyfication, change was surely essential?

The closed roads and seating areas are a "gift" from Mayor Bloomberg. Locals really dislike it--cabbies hate it even more and anyone with difficulty walking who used to take a cab to the many establishments in the area suffers greatly.

The Disney characters are individuals dressing up. They are hopping you will have your kids take a picture with them and then they can ask for money. They are not sanctioned by the city and one of the "Elmos" recently ran into trouble with the law due to inappropriate actions. So, visit, enjoy but unlike in the real Disney, do not blink when your kids are interacting with these characters. At least in Disney Land the characters are supposed to be screened before hired.

I wondered about those characters.....good to know. I like the seating and such but wondered what that was doing to the traffic flow in an already stressed out area.

I think it it becoming to much like a theme park type area. TS is a "real" place in an amazing city, of course tourists like to see the area that has been a go to place for so long but does ir really need to change it into something that is getting to seem plastic and fake.

Just want to respond to Mez. As A local, I have indeed spend some time in Times Square, and have seen in change from its seedy former incarnation to its new bright and shiny self. I think the New Times Square is much much improved.

But, it does seem removed from the rest of the City. The restaurants there cater to tourists or theatergoers and are overpriced chain stooge. The area is crowded and confused. Tourists outnumber NYers about 10 to 1. Plus, other than the theater and Times Square itself - there are just not a lot of places that we visit there.

I generally like to avoid it. It is just too intense, packed with way too many people are scrambling around doing nothing with great energy. But, it is a great way to dazzle anyone first time visitors. I actually love riding in those crazy pedicabs, but gotta get the nerve up first.

I actually liked the old Times Square when it was seedy - at least back then, it had character. I am probably pretty alone in this preference as I really detest what it has become and never go unless absolutely forced to go there for something specific which I make sure is a rarity. There is nothing about it that says "New York City" to me anymore - other than the theaters, of course. The rest of the area is just one big gigantic tourist trap with shops and restaurants you can go to in Anytown USA - nothing special.
