New York City Hop On/Off Tours

We are planing our first visit to NYC and would like to do the hop on / hop off tours but there are so many different groups with different prices. We are looking at the "CitySightsNY" who seem to have the best deal but we are looking for thoughts from people who have done this.

Thanks for your time.

I think most here will tell you that the HOHO tours in NYC are not the same as in other places--- because of the presence of the subway you are much better off getting the minimal tour and just staying on the bus for the entire loop just to get a feel for the place and then gong in more detail on the subway.. I saw a line to get on one of those buses the other day and there no kidding were at least 200 people waiting to get on and people were screaming at the guys selling the tickets--- neither of the major companies seems to be better than the other one. But it is up to you--- at least don't buy your tickets in advance until you see the operations and make your choice then

We Used city sights tours we did the entire loop as a means to familiarise ourselves with the city we also did the night tour of Brooklyn after that we did a lot of walking and used public transport. I thought they were good value for what we payed.

As was said HOHO tours in any city are meant to be a sighting shot and the HOHO part is a misnomer. If you use the tour then complete the circuit and then decide where you want to visit at another time. A tip to the wise "USE the Subway" wherever possible unless you prefer walking in some instances. Plan to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

Ponte called it right. The HOHO buses are fine to get an overview of a small slice of touristy NYC. They help you get your bearings, and explain about some of what you may want to visit later on. They ride on a prescribed route and essentially skim the surface of Manhattan and a small part of Brooklyn. But, they are NOT transportation - for that you get a Metrocard.
