Subway System

I have been told that one way to get from the NYC Port Authority bus station to the Ellis Island Ferry is to take the #1 train to south ferry exit. Can I assume the best way to get back is to take the #1 train back to the Port Authority exit or is there another train number to get back? thanks for your help

Just remember Uptown and Downtown. The trip to South Ferry will be on a Downtown train, and the trip back to Port Authority will be Uptown.

The #1 train does not stop at the Port Authority bus terminal.

At 42nd Street, the #1 train is at Seventh Avenue, and stops at the Times Square subway station. Meanwhile the Port Authority bus terminal is found between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, which places it directly above the 42nd Street station of the A, C and E trains on the Eighth Avenue line. While there is a free transfer underground via a passageway between these two stations, they are not the same station, and are a full long block apart from each other.

If you want to use the #1 train, you need to walk from the Port Authority bus terminal to the Times Square station (either on the sidewalk above ground or via the undergrojnd passageway), and to board the #1 train there at Times Square. If you come back on the same train, note that South Ferry is the terminal of the #1, and so trains leaving South Ferry only go uptown.

If you do not want to walk the extra block at 42nd Street, and want to get to the closest subway station for the Ellis Island Ferry, then you should take the A or the C train downtown from 42nd Street/Eighth Avenue to Fulton Street. At Fulton Street, get off and go upstairs a level to find the downtown #4 or #5 train (use the stairs near the rear of the A or C you just got off.) Take the #4 or #5 downtown to Bowling Green, and exit near the front of the train. You will find yourself in Battery Park, at the head of the walkway that leads to Castle Clinton, where the ticket window for the Ellis Island ferry is. To come back, you need to enter using the entrance in front of the Custom House/Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian, next to Bowling Green itself.
