In New York City, "downtown" means lower Manhattan -- the financial district. You're going to midtown. 49th Street doesn't provide enough information. You're going somewhere on East 49th Street or West 49th Street. Which is it, and where on that street?

Travel options will vary depending on exactly where you're going. Numbers start at Fifth Avenue and go up 100 numbers per numbered avenue - heading east from 5th Avenue on E. 49th Street and west from Fifth Avenue on W. 49th Street.

BTW - "Downtown" is both an area and a direction. Subway entrances in Manhattan are often marked as "uptown" and "downtown." This indicates direction. Uptown is north and downtown is south.

So if you were on the Upper West Side, for example, you'd go downtown to get to midtown. It actually will make sense once you're in NYC. Manhattan is primarily a grid system that's easy to follow.
