Check in thread for local regulars

I figure we can let each other know we're okay and share war stories as we get power back.

We're all fine, no damage that I can see to the apartment, though I haven't checked the building yet, and we didn't lose power, so we're all set. A tree fell on my father's car, but he's okay.

I know many of you didn't fare as well. Best wishes wih recovery and clean up.

"unlike the Hilton across the street, who covered them"

evening: Glad to see that you weathered the storm OK. Your post about the Hilton is sad. I'm glad to hear that others in your neighborhood were nicer.

Update: I'm fine, I teach college in NYC and they opened the college yesterday; I had class today and less than half the students attended. Most emailed me that the couldn't make it in. (I'm sure that some were perhaps "taking advantage" but I know many really couldn't make it) Let's see what happens when the public schools open Monday.

I went over to the Time Warner building which has a "Marathon Lounge" opened (planned for a few days). It was medium-crowded, not mostly by runners of course. They had a tread-mill simulation of the marathon where you could run and in time-lapse the marathon course was projected on the screen. Then it would take your picture at the "finish line."

They also moved "The Crane" on 57th St to a new position and secured it but it is still up.

Yes, we've contributed to the local Red Cross. Anything else we could be doing?

The Hilton NY Fashion District on 26th Street was letting people - including us - use their lobby outlets (and generally loiter about) on Tuesday 10/30. Sounds like they later got snooty??

Power came back on in the Flatiron District aroubd 7 pm last night. Electricity, running water, heat...who could ask for more? :)

The neighborhood is rapidly coming back to life. Once places are cleaned up and restocked it will be normal again - within a couple of days, I'm sure.

Thinking of those who are not so lucky...

Read that Duracell was giving away free batteries and setting up docking systems for people to charge their phones, so too with some businesses in the Financial District.
