hoho or subway

Hi I'm going to new York Nov 29-Dec 2 do you recommend the hoho bus or just using the subway. We are staying at the Hilton fashion district and want to see all the touristy things such as statue of liberty ESB, grand central,Rockefeller center, central park, greenwhich village etc.

subway

The HOHO buses should NOT be used for transportation.

You'll be able to see twice as much in half the time if you use the subway

HOHO buses are great for seeing a number of popular sights in a short amount of time with running commentary and interesting facts thrown in.......however, when my family and I take them, we use them for just that .....seeing a lot of sights..........for actually getting around the city, subway/bus - ie public transit is the way to go.......we don't usually "Hop off" the HOHO buses...........

The answer is "it depends on what you want".

HOHO buses are not transportation; they are a guided tour.

The subway is not a guided tour; it is transportation.

Which do you want? If you want a guided tour, the subway is a lousy choice, because it has no tour guide, and being underground you can't see much anyway. If you want transportation, the HOHO bus is a lousy choice, because since it is above ground it crawls through traffic, it follows a single mono-directional route, going to places you don't want and not going to places you do want, and it is way more expensive.

If you want a tour of the city, see all the sights with commentary and history of the sights, then HOHO will fit the bill. However its not a means of transportation round the city as the buses go on their loops.

Sometimes, and if this is your first visit, then the HOHO can be a good way to familiarise yourself with the city, then if your stay allows, continue to explore the area using the subway. The approach to exploring the city is " not set in concrete", personal preferences come into play.

Its our first time to new York and we want to see as much as we can. We were originally going to just use the subway but were afraid we will end up missing our stops and getting lost and end up wasting time and not get to see as much which is why we decided to look into the hoho.

Well, that's just silly.

So what if you miss your stop? You get off the train at the next express stop, turn around, and take the next train back. Worrying about missing your stop is like worrying about missing your exit on the highway -- if you are paying attention, it won't happen, and if it does happen, it isn't the end of the world. Do you refuse to drive your own car because you are frozen with panic that might miss a turn?

And how does using the HOHO keep you from missing your stop, or from getting lost? And as for wasting time -- are you kidding? Have you any idea what street traffic is like in Manhattan???? If you want to waste time, go sit on top of a tour bus trying to turn onto 34th Street from Eighth Avenue, or onto Eighth from 33rd.

I repeat what I said above, but which you seem to have ignored: the HOHO bus is not transportation, it is a guided tour. If you want a guided tour, ti is fine -- which means you should probably stay on the whole route. By talking about having a "stop", though, you seem to be interested in travelling somewhere, rather than sittling still while listening to commentary. If you are trying to travel from point A to point B, you do NOT want the HOHO -- what you want is transportation (such as the subway, or a city bus) -- and the HOHO is not transportation, it is a guided tour.
