I am staying midtwon for a few days end of January and looking to find a bar to enjoy a few beers at a reasonable price and can meet the locals. Not worried about eating just a beer

Rattle n hum

Ginger man

Though limiting yourself to midtown means you'll have beers with tourists.

We are there at the end of January also. There is a nice bar on the corner of 42nd and 2nd but I cannot think what it is called. Seemed to be a congregating place for the staff from the UN building.

The area around Penn staiton is not the best place for real local bars. It's where folks who commute in and out of Manhattan from Penn station may hang out and sports fan coming to an event at Madison Square Garden. Here are the places NY Magazine lists as neighborhood bars in that area.

The area just south in the 20's has more options

Why walking distance from Penn Station? There are loads of awesome bars I could recommend but that limitation is making it really difficult, and the two I've already recommended are within walking distance? Did you google them?

Stout and Feile on 34th Street are OK.

Address - Rattle N Hum 33rd and 5th Ave / The Ginger Man - 36th and 5th Ave.

Ideally, you want to hop on the Subway at Penn Station and get into the village. Plenty of places in Greenwich Village, East Village, LES, Tribeca, etc, or over the water in Williamsburg or Park Slope, where you'll find a bar with locals, much more so than near Penn Station.

If you actually do visit the Times Sq area - there is a small very local old time bar very near Virgil's on 44th Street South Side between 7th and 6th - Can't think of the name.

Live Bait across the street from Madison Square Park. It's low key, kind of divey, and has good food too.
