new york apartment

About to book a property through Home Away - Ref. No. 3477914 - a bit dubious about the reviews. Anyone stayed there?.

Read the second Top Question (list to the right). It's frequently discussed on the forum as well. Short term apartment rentals are illegal in NYC. Scams abound. Things go bad. etc.

Do a quick forum search and you'll see hundreds of recent posts on the topic.

Anyone else think people should be forced to read the top questions before posting?

Unfortunately if you're on a mobile device, especially if you're using the app, you can't see the top questions! I would be a lot of people are reading and writing on the forum via their phone, iPad etc. so they have no idea there even are top questions/FAQs....

One of the biggest problems we hear about is the apartment scams from places like Homeaway.

Many times it turns out that the scam artist is offshore and they're stealing pictures of apartments for sale and putting them on phony websites as vacation rentals for which you are supposed to send them a deposit via PayPal. Lots of people show up in New York only to discover they've been scammed, they've lost their money, they've flown half way around the world, it is cold and they do not have any place to stay.

It is very common for visitors to arrive to discover they've lost their money and have been scammed. Imagine what a horrible situation that is to be in - happens repeatedly every single day.

Hopefully you won't be the latest victim. Get a legal hotel.

The top questions show up on my iPad.

Just so you know what happens to people who rent out their apartments, here's a recent article
