An evening/night in Harlem

Hi,

I’m going to be visiting New York with my girlfriend in April for the second time and after we visited amateur night at the Apollo last time we enjoyed it so much we wanted to make sure we caught it again (we’ve actually changed our plans slightly to make sure we’re in town on a Wednesday for just this reason!).

Last time round we literally went to the show and then headed back downtown, but this time it would be great to spend an evening in Harlem as, despite dire warnings from an American friend before we headed over last time that we would be shot/robbed/stabbed within moments of emerging from the subway station, it looked like a decent place to spend the night (actually I thought it looked really similar to South East London, where I’m from).

My basic itinerary at the moment for an evening in Harlem is

6.30pm – dinner at Sylvias

7.30pm – Apollo

Afterwards – head to 67 Orange for drinks (at W113 and 8th av) and then Camaradas (at E115 and 1st) in East Harlem to sample the culture of that part of town.

For those of you that know Harlem, does the above sound reasonable ? Is there anywhere that we’re missing out on that we should really be visiting ?

Many thanks for all your help,

Craig

Sylvia's is past it's prime

Red Rooster is a better option but you NEED a reservation.

Camaradas (which I don't know) is not geographically desireable for the rest of your evening. Look at a map.

Many thanks NYWhizz, I'll book a table at Red Rooster instead. Is the whole East Harlem area too out of the way in comparison to the Apollo ?

Kind regards,

Craig

I agree- definitely dine at Red Rooster! It is incredibly close to the Apollo. The other places you mentioned are several blocks away- not bad at all though I am a walker : )

Have fun!
