Getting back to Manhattan from Jersey Gardens

I am visiting New York and would like to go to Jersey Gardens. I am intending to go by public transport but have read that the buses back from the mall to Manhattan are a nightmare and that you can't always get on the buses due to the number of people travelling. Does anyone know if this is true or have any advice? Is there a best time of day to travel back?

The last buses of the day do get very full , my advice is if you are concerned about not getting on the bus , is to go early when it opens and then leave in the afternoon , that way you should get a seat on the bus.

I would agree that it is difficult to get on a bus at the end of the day, and they are crowded. We left to go back to Manhattan fairly late, as the shops were shutting, and had to line up for over 20 minutes for a bus that was very crowded - people standing in the aisle. It was freezing cold standing in line (literally - it had snowed that day!), but we just saw it as part of the adventure! We'd had such a good day shopping, that we didn't really mind. But we had started the day a little later than we could have. If you went early and left early, it might be better.

Thanks very much for your replies. I was intending to get there for 10am when the mall opens and leave at maybe 3pm/3.30pm so, hopefully, we'll be ok.

Terrible idea. Really awful. Especially in December.

Long Island City (Queens) is a neighborhood in New York City with a lot of economical hotel options. Long Island City is along the subway lines.

Staying in New Jersey (near the airport) is a bad idea. Most likely the hotel will not shuttle you back and forth to Jersey Gardens, they'll shuttle you to the AirTrain Newark station on the airport grounds. The train is $25.00 roundtrip everyday. You'll need to take AirTrain Newark to the NJ Transit train to New York Penn Station. There is only one station in New York City for NJ Transit so you'll need the subway to get around New York City.

Staying near Newark Airport for a visit to New York City is very misguided idea - December is a very busy month and you'll have a very difficult and expensive time with transportation. Buses to / from Jersey Gardens tend to be limited to when people are going to / from Jersey Gardens for shopping. People do not use Jersey Gardens Mall as a transportation hub so getting back to Jersey Gardens after a Broadway play in the evening will not work.

SDallen: Make sure you are looking for Long Island CITY, not Long Island.

Long Island City is a neighborhood in Queens just across the East River, and one subway stop, from Manhattan.

Long Island is an island over 100 miles long. By convention, the term does not refer to Brooklyn or Queens, even though these are geographically a part of the island.
