Maine Lobster Roll at Luk'es lobster or Lobster Place. Get an Arepa next to Luke's while you at it

NY Bagel (I like with just butter or cinnamon raisin walnut spread)

Great pasta - Giovanni Rana, Maialino, Scarpetta, Da Andrea just to name a few

Pizza - NY style, Neapolitan - Don Antonio, Keste, Motorino just to name a few

Pastrami at Katz's or the other places Sue mentioned

Ethnic Food - Thai on 9th, Indian in Curry hill, Korean in Koreatown, Russian in Brighton Beach, Chinese in Chinatown, Sri Lankan in Staten Island. just some examples

Anything in Eataly

Steak - Peter Luger, Wolfgang's, Minetta Tavern

BBQ in Williamsburg - Briskettown, Fette Sau

Mac n' Cheese - S'mac, The Smith

Fine dining - A 10 course tasting at Jungsik (something I've done last week)

Only one?! Definitely a real New York bagel with cream cheese and lox. But then cupcakes. And deli meats. And pizza. And... aargh too much choice! It's hard to go wrong though!

I love bialys from Kossar's Bialys on Grand and Essex, two blocks from Katz's. (A bialy is a second cousin to the bagel, a "thumbprint" instead of a hole, a slightly rough crust, half the carbs, and a little bit of onion in the "thumbprint", and a slightly "sourdoughier" dough, the recipe brought over from Bialistock, Russia).

If you're in Brooklyn, and maybe now it's in other places, a lot of pizza places now have a style called "Grandma's pizza" (Google it), which is square like Sicilian, but much, much thinner than Sicilian; it's even thinner than "regular" (Neapolitan) . And they put on really good-tasting globs of tomato sauce and random pieces of cheese, and it's like being in a small place in Firenze or Calabria.

Finally, actually tasty Knishes from Yonah Schimmel's on Houston Street at 1st Avenue, near Katz's. Instead of the modern crummy rectangular pillow-shaped knishes everyone seems to sell nowadays, they still sell the kind my grandmother made at home: a good filling, round/cylindrical knish with layers of outer pastry shell, not fried dough. They sell potato, cheese, kasha, cheese with raspberry (if I remember right), and other non-meat combinations. The place looks less fancy than your average pizza place (if that's possible), but it's been at the same location for about 100 or more years. It's one of the easiest places to get what I consider a real knish, not a mass-produced one. BTW, they also sell good bagels and bialys.
