JFK to Manhattn

Saw quite a few posts on this but they were fairly old. We will be arriving at JFK next Tuesday at around 11 am and staying mear Herald Square, there will be 2 of us with 1 medium size suitcase each. Would be convenient for us to take the AirTrain and the LIRR with our luggage, if so would be easy to walk from Pen Station to Herald Sqaure? Thanks in advance!!

Yes. About a 5 minute walk depending on the exact address. A typical route is shown in the link below. You can update this with the exact hotel etc.

Here's a Google link for the whole journey. Edit your times to update the exact trains;

Yes. The combined JFK AirTrain / LIRR fare is $12.00 It is $5.00 for the JFK AirTrain and $7.00 for the LIRR. There are frequent trains. It takes roughly 10 - 15 minutes from the terminal to Jamaica depending on which terminal you board from. Most LIRR trains take about 19 minutes with a couple taking 21 minutes because they make an extra stop at Kew Gardens and / or Forest Hills.

Fare control is at Jamaica where there are uniformed people to help. There are two new machines closest to you as you approach the line of big shiny machines. The two machines closest to you with green trim and railroad tracks alongside sell the combined JFK AirTrain / LIRR tickets. Select "off peak" and it should be $12.00 USD. per person.

Hold on to the ticket as it will be collect by the conductor on board the LIRR.

Follow the signs at Penn to exit for 32nd St. and 7th Avenue. Simply walk one block east in the direction of vehicular traffic (it is a one-way street for cars) to 6th Avenue and you'll be in the heart of Herald Square.

Thanks for the info, would our luggage be a problem? I did read that they have overhead bins but obviously it won't fit.

There is plenty of space at either end of the carriage near the vestibule doors.

You do not have to worry about excess luggage - people use the trains to move all their stuff out to and back home from their summer homes on Long Island. You'll have a fraction of what people have around the Memorial Day holiday weekend (unofficial start of summer) and Labor Day (unofficial end of summer)
