Leaving booking accomodation too late?

I am waiting to hear the outcome of funding for my job. If successful at getting my contract extended I want to book a last minute trip to New York.

I will hear about my job on the 12th of May. I want to fly on the 23rd May.

If I can find a flight is this too late to book cheap accomodation in New York? Is it a busy time for the city? I am looking for a hostel/cheap hotel with a private room if this makes a difference.

Why not make a reservation now that you can cancel without penalty?

The 23rd is right before a big bank holiday weekend here (Memorial Day). I think airfare is a much bigger problem though than hotel. You could book something now that's cancelable up to a day or before if you don't come. That's what I'd do. If you're staying ay 4 nights, the country ainn in along aisland City has a rate of $142 with breakfast included and private bath cancelable without penalty til May 21. If you'd rather a hostel with shared bathroom, look at the YMCA Vanderbilt and Westside. Both have private rooms.

Ahh right. I didn't realise it was memorial weekend. I can get relatively cheap flights with Virgin but I'm not sure if I'd hate it if it was too crazy busy.

Another option would be mid July but the flights are £200 more.

Would memorial weekend be manic. Would it prevent me being able to book some of things I'd like to do?(911 memorial, Top of the Rock, Staten Island Ferry, a show etc).

Many locals leave the city that weekend for beaches. Popular with visitors but not at all manic. 9/11 tickets might be harder but not other things. The SI ferry is huge and free. It's not the best way to see the SOL though.

That's good to know. Thank you. What would you say the best way to see the SOL is? I am not too bothered about going up close to it but would like some good photos if possible.

If you have a zoom lens and just want photos, the SI ferry is fine. Otherwise use any of the cruises like

Nywatertaxi.com

Nywaterway.com

Statuecruises.com

Circleline.com

They all will make stops for photo ops.
