You should start with a NYC guide book. After reading a few pages, you'll see that that there is so much to see and do(!). Also, take a look at the TOP QUESTIONS on the right of this page, re: "What are the Must-See's and Must-Do's?" link.
Look at the right hand of the page at top questions. Fourth question down will get you started.
It might help if you indicate if it's your first visit to NYC and what your interests are.Edited: 25 April 2013, 21:38
Your top picks will really depend on your interests. If budget isn't an issue, I would try to include a Broadway Show and eat at least one special dinner in a world-class restaurant of your choosing. Visiting one of the top museums is also worthwhile, but how you prioritize that will (again) depend on your interests. :-)
Thanks for that :-), question for you, I know it may sound cliche but you always see New York on films at Christmas time and were there from the 17th dec, so will the ice rink be outside Macy's and things?
Which movie has an ice rink outside Macy's?
As for other ice rinks, yes, there are many - Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center and Wollman Rink (Central Park) are the popular ones.
There's lots of Christmas bling to see around town but the stretch of 5th Ave, say from Central Park to Bryant Park is well worth taking a look at.Edited: 25 April 2013, 22:03
