Cheap places to stay?

I'm looking to come to New York this fall. Can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay that's either in NYC or New Jersey, with good transport links into the city.

Prices fluctuate dramatically by date. There's nothing cheap mid Sept. (opening of the UN General Assembly, Fashion Week etc.) What's cheap to you? (nightly budget)? Which airport will you be using? If you fly in/out of JFK or LGA, NJ is a bad idea. Long Island City has some cheap but decent options near a subway. Look at the Verve.

What do you consider cheap? Country Inn and Suites in Long Island City (Queens) is a popular and affordable option. It's near the subway and it's a very short trip into Manhattan. Prices are usually relatively affordable, but autumn is an expensive time to visit and some dates are especially pricey.

If you provide your exact dates and target budget, forum members may be able to give you some more specific recommendations.

Cheap may be the YMCA, depending on your budget.

Well the dates are flexible at the moment. Was thinking 1st week of October. I wanted to avoid the Thanksgiving rush!

Around $50 a night would be great, and we're not keen on hostels

October 1st is more expensive than Thanksgiving, but either way $50 won't buy you more than a bed in a shared room in a hostel, if that.

Can you increase to $150 per night?

Cheapest time for hotels is January-February, and even then $100 a night in NYC isn't likely. Remember taxes add about 15% too. You might find something in New Jersey for that but then you'll have to figure out how much transportation each day into the city will cost you, and how much time it will take out of your day.

Long Island City in Queens NYC is often recommended for budget conscious hotels, you might find something "close" to your budget, but you're still going to have to up the ante a bit.

Hey Kim F:-) You may want to check.. play with some dates.. at The Astor on the Park across from Central Park on the UWS! Nothing fancy, but someone did a trip report here recently who stayed and got a great rate.. within your budget! Lots of recent reviews on the property here for you to read and see what you think;-) Best! Happy planning.. and enJOY!

Thought that Astor on the park was operating illegally?
