First timer, subway question

We will be getting to Penn station from Newark and need to take the subway one stop to 42nd. Is this considered a free transfer or do we need to pay again for the subway ride? If so, how much? Would it be much better to take a cab instead? Thanks!

It is actually a short walk.

It is not a free transfer. Your $12.50 ticket from Newark Airport to New York Penn Station does not get you beyond New York Penn Station. In other words, you can't use your airport ticket to ride the NYC subway.

You can take any uptown train one stop to Times Square or you can walk. The single ride subway fare is $2.50. It is such an easy walk though.

If you're able and time allows, walking is a good option for this scenario.

it is an easy walk, but if you have a lot of luggage a taxi might be a good idea, and not that expensive.

if you plan to use public transportation during your stay, buy a weekly metro card at Penn Station. then use it for the rest of your stay.

I got a taxi for a little further than that, but man it was WORTH EVERY DIME by the time we'd lugged ourselves and our luggage through the airport, the first train to the next train, then out of Penn Station!!! Not to mention that we'd been up since 4:30 AM and it was now after 5 p.m.
