How far in advance should I book a table at a restaurant?

Hi all,

We are arriving in New York on Monday 16 September and staying for 7 nights so still a couple of months away but when should I make dinner reservations at the restaurants I really want to eat at?

During my stay I really want to eat at The Little Owl and Toloache.

I booked The Little Owl as soon as reservations opened - a month before my preferred date. I booked via email as Open Table didn't show any suitable times. Definately book here a month ahead.

I booked Toloache a fair while in advance as we were going before a Broadway play so it had to be a specific date and time. Bookings on Open Table were available more than a month ahead. If you know when you want to go you may as well book ahead, but I don't think a month ahead is needed here.

Agree with Melb.;). little Owl very hard to get. Toloache less difficult but popular.

Thanks for the replies. I'll email Little Owl to try and get the reservation I want and I'll book Toloache on open table.
