its a good time to visit - many new yorkers leave town for the beach or the country so the city is a little less crowded.

DB_NYC... whew! That's good to hear! Love the fact the city will be less crowded! Since it will be less crowded, what are some must see's/must do's because of that non-busy time?

Things that would be less busy include trains at rush hour, stores frequented by people in the city to work, lunch places near the office buildings, sidewalks at lunch time, etc.

The tourist sites are likely to be just as crowded as people will be taking long weekends in the City from nearby places---like Boston!

this is true - the "touristy" things will not be less crowded.

but restaurants down in the village (for example) won't be packed as much.

my advice to all tourists is get out of midtown and explore other neighborhoods.

the filthy streets near penn station is not the NY I know and love.

DBNYC... "my advice to all tourists is get out of midtown and explore other neighborhoods." What neighborhoods precisely?

And then you also said... "the filthy streets near penn station is not the NY I know and love." What filthy streets should you avoid around there?

I would not say that Penn Station area is filthy. It's just not reflective of a "true" NYC experience. Mostly commuters/MSG goers or workers.
