There are 646 reviews of the property here on TA. I'm sure if hotel guests are getting mugged on anything approaching a regular basis, it might be mentioned.

Out of curiosity, where did you hear this?

I had absolutely no problems. It's a great street for accessing the PABT/42nd St station and easy access to other stations. Easy walking distance to good food and also Times square for a gawk as well.

Back in the late 1970's, yes.

Today, the complete opposite. Very safe.

I stayed at "The Distrikt" which is next or near "The Fairfield" in May 2011 and found the area

very safe. Yes, the probation office is down the street but never presented a problem.

Folowing up on jyee24's response, an added plus is that it's very convenient when you have to see your probation officer!

I've stayed in that area. I wouldn't call it a high crime mugging area but it's not nice...there are porn shops and needle bins (for addicts) in the area... it's not like staying in the Upper East Side. But it is convenient.

The area is fine. A few years ago I thought it looked a bit run down, but we were just back a month or so ago and stayed just north of the area and it was very convenient to everything and much improved. I didn't feel unsafe walking around at all.

It is safe. It is not high crime. However, it is not attractive. It's not an area I would choose to stay. There are much nicer areas of New York.
