1st week in July or mid October?

Hi, we are very limited to when we can go as hubby works in a school and has to go away during school breaks. So only 2 weeks in the year any good to us (unless we go August which I reckon will be far to hot and busy?)

When would be best - first week in July or mid October? And why. Thanks

Ps, we will be staying in Manhattan if that makes any difference.

July will have longer lines for all of the tourist attractions and much hotter temperatures. July might have more things going on like concerts in Central Park, movies at Bryant Park, kayaking on the Hudson or East River, nearby beaches, etc. Shorts and t-shirt weather.

October will be cooler, jackets will be required. There might still be some fall colors, and tourist lines will likely be shorter. You may find lower rates in October as well. I might opt for October, but July isn't bad either.

If you like hot weather then July will suit you.

But ime October was great weather wise for sightseeing and some of the trees in Central Park were turning colour which made for some lovely photos. Especially around the lake. The later in October you go the nicer the leaves will be.

October is busy too as is July.

July usually has good summer sale prices for hotels. October is a pricey time for hotels. Some of that difference is due to more desirable weather for visiting.

This August was cooler then July, I wouldn't discount August based solely on weather

Lodging prices are usually higher in October than July or August because there are more business travelers. Also, many "leaf peepers"start or end their visits with a few days in the city.

As stated July was miserably hot this year while most of August was pleasant. Of course we have no idea what will happen next year. It could be just the opposite.

Thanks everyone - I'm tempted by July. I'm used to really hot weather - 42 degrees in Italy last year - and I fancy picnic in Central Park.
