Travelling from JFK airport to the Hotel in NYC

We are travelling to New York (and the US) for the first time. Could anyone recommend the safest, most efficient and hassle-free way of getting from JFK airport to the centre of New York where our hotel is? Is there a good shuttle service, is there a good taxi company that we should pre-arrange or is there another service that we don't know about?

Your help with this would be really appreciated

M

Depends what hotel you're going to. Generally the cheapest and most reliable way into manhattan is the AirTrain and then subway. Alternatively the NYC Airporter will take you into town then give a shuttle to your hotel (link below) or you can just pre-book a black car to take you in.

Or you could just walk out to the taxi line and pay $52.50, plus toll and tip, for a total of $65-$70.

You don't say how many people are involved. I would recommend taxi, (fixed prices as already stated), it is so straight forward, follow the signs and join the (fast moving) queue. Be careful to avoid the touts offering you rides. Using the taxi, really is so simple. Of the other options available, shared shuttle would be a poor choice.

No need to arrange a black car. You can take a taxi from outside the terminal.

JFK AirTrain / LIRR is a combined $12.00 ticket during weekday off-peak times.

It is the fastest, safest and most reliable way to get into Manhattan from JFK Airport.

I have always used the NYC Airporter if staying in Midtown hotels. It is hassle-free and easy to find at the airport. You can buy a voucher online that is good for 90 days after the purchase date for $29 per person roundtrip or wait and buy at the airport. (You don't have to schedule a particular time in advance.) I prefer the Airporter to the smaller shared shuttle services since they tend to stick to more of a schedule and don't wait to fill up before leaving.

Once you get to Grand Central, they will have a smaller shuttle van that will take you right to your hotel or you might be able to walk depending on your hotel location.
