Traffic leaving Manhattan on a Friday afternoon

What's the best way to avoid traffic leaving Manhattan's Upper East Side for New Jersey's Cape May on a Friday afternoon of Columbus Day weekend? We plan to leave around 2:30 pm after we pick up my son from school?

There is no way to avoid traffic on a holiday Friday afternoon.

Lincoln tunnel probably your best best for leaving the city. And I'd be inclined to head over to the west side and go down West End / 11th Ave. You can enter the tunnel from 11th At 40th St.

Leave earlier? With it being a holiday weekend, though, even that might not help.

Thanks for the tips. I was even thinking about taking the train across the Hudson and renting a car in New Jersey to avoid the tunnel traffic.

You seemed to have picked an OK time. Any later & you will get slammed.

Listen to shadow traffic on 880 & 1010. They will give you the best "escape route"
