106th & Broadway

Hi all, I understand that there is a Titanic memorial at this intersection in a V-shaped park. However, when reading about this park, it was also mentioned that this may be an unsafe area of the city. I was considering visiting this park next month. Could someone please comment on safety as far as this area is concerned? Perhaps this would be best visited in the morning?

it is called Straus Park. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straus_Park The area is fine, I go there frequently to visit friends, as it is the Manhattan end of the M60 bus line. The area is a bit more economically mixed than other parts of Manhattan, but no reason to worry. It is just a few blocks south of Columbia University (and Tom's restaurant if you are Seinfeld fan.). Also consider seeing St John the Divine while in the area. http://www.stjohndivine.org/visit.html

if you have an interest in the Titanic, there are several places around town that might interest you.

The people commenting on the park on Yelp do not seem to see safety as an issue:

On my visits to New York City, I often make a stop at Absolute Bagels (Broadway near 108th Street). I've never felt unsafe in the neighborhood.

The area is safe, and there's a lot to see in that area. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine and Columbia University are nearby. Not too far away are Riverside Church and Grant's Tomb.

Here's more info on Straus Park and the Memorial to Ida and Isidor Straus. The Memorial is also noted because of Audrey Munson, the model, was muse to several noted artists of the period.

Very safe. Very pleasant area to stroll around.

You want unsafe - there are places in The Rockaways. Odds of you ending up in the Rockaways? Unless you are looking for surfing locations, odds are you'll never ever get anywhere near The Rockaways.

You'll be very safe and you don't have anything to worry about - even at night.
