I would love any recommendations for a good Chinese restaurant that is not in Chinatown - preferably in either midtown or Chelsea ,

My favorite "neighborhood" Chinese is Charlie Mom on 6th Avenue and 11th Street.

At the same intersection is Sammy's Noodle Shop which is extremely popular.

There are so many good Chinese places. The corner of 24th Street and 9th Avenue - Grand Sichuan I think it is called - very popular. Good stuff...

If it's upscale chinese you are looking for, Shun Lee Palace is a bit of an institution having been around for years and still gets good reviews. nymag.com/listings/…

There's Shun Lee West with a casual cafe on the west side as well.

Chin Chin is another option http://www.chinchinny.com/index.html, although it has been a while since I've been, as for myself, it is to chinatown I head to for chinese!

More pan Asian fusion but very good is the The Kin Shop on 6th Ave very near Sammy's noodle house. Innovative Asian dishes with a great vibe.
