Honeymoon in 7 nights - Cities to visit near NYC

I plan to be with my wife (I'll call her like this soon :-) in NYC by the end of year for our honeymoon, precisely from Dec. 24th to Jan 1st. I'd already been in NYC, but she had not.

We plan to fly to Newark, stay in NYC for 2 nights (3 days), and for the rest of time, visit and stay in another city (or cities), and a 2-3 hours drive distant city seems fair if it's a nice and cheaper place to stay.

We are doing it not only because hotels in Manhattan are so expensive by that time of year, but also because she likes the idea of meeting and staying in more than one city on the same trip.

What would be those suggested cities?

Boston. Hotel prices are quite affordable that time of year. It's a lovely city to explore. It's a compact walking city and also has a decent subway system. You can get there via Amtrak and it is a pleasant ride.

You won't need a car at all. That's a good thing because winter driving can be tricky and dangerous.

The trip will take you more than 2-3 hours though.

A closer city would be Philadelphia. You can also take the train there. I'm biased, but I think Boston would be more interesting and romantic than Philly.

Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore and Washington DC.

If you like to gamble you could also try Atlantic City NJ, the Poconos (which are not near a city & for which you will need to rent a car) or possibly one of the Connecticut casinos like Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods.

Thank you all for your reply!

I heard your suggestions for Boston, and I booked my trip arriving Dec 24th @ Boston and leaving Jan 5th @ Newark.

I also booked hotels Dec25th-29th@Boston and Dec29th-Jan1st@NYC.

For the remaing 4 nights, I was thinking about Philadelphia. Now I have other option to choose from, I will post here :-)

One question: I know that in NYC I don't need a car to enjoy the city... Do the same happen in the other cities?

I would choose Boston or just spend the extra time in NYC. Two to three days really isn't enough.
