I wouldn't bother to cab to Chelsea just to eat. If you are going from the High Line or art galleries ON to dinner, that's another thing. Some places to consider near Grand Central:

DB Bistro Moderne

Lambs Club (I haven't been there)

Grand Central Oyster Bar

Benjamin Steak House

Patroon

In Chelsea, both Del Posto and Collichio and Sons are memorable, but at the top end of your range. Buddakan and Spice Market are equally memorable Asian Fusion in the area. You vaguely suggested you need a place that opens at 5? Not all fine restaurants do.

Go to Scarpetta. Close to the high line. Make resvs asap if you decide to go

Colicchio & Sons is also very good near the High Line. If you'd rather be closer to GCT, Ai Fiori in the Langham hotel or the Shop in the Andaz Fifth ave. are good as is Bryant Park Grill.

Thanks for your great suggestions everyone! I was also thinking of Tia Pol but not sure if it is located near the High Line. I need to find a map of NYC.

If you exit the High Line at 23rd Street you'll be very near to Tia Pol!

Tia Pol is located on 10th Avenue, between 22nd and 23rd. So it looks like it is very close to the High Line. What does everyone think of that restaurant? Thank you!

It's one of my favorite tapas restaurants. :)

great place, but tiny and it gets crowded. There are others in the neighborhood if you cant get into Tia Pol.
