Looking for unique/fun restaurants

Our family visited NY in 2008. We went to the Ninja restaurant on Hudson Street.... Kids loved it and we still talk about experience at the Ninja place. Looking for other similar experiences to top that one! HA! (Kids challenged me)

We will be visiting Dec 12-16 and staying in Central Park area. Distance is not a big concern if we can get there by subway or cab..... Any suggestions would be awesome.

We usually go to a restaurant for the quality of the food.

If your children liked the NINJA take them back there..........

You don't specify the age of sex of your children, but for girls, Alice's Tea Cup and American Girl Cafe immediately come to mind.

You could also try:

* FAO Schwarz Toy Soldier breakfast - includes breakfast and playing with toys before the store opens to the public each day

* Dylan's Candy Bar - not technically a meal but kids will love it

* Fetch Bar and Grill - if they like dogs (not to eat but to play with!)

* Ellen's Stardust Diner - where the wait staff break out into Broadway tunes as they serve the food

* Peanut Butter and Co - if they like peanut butter

Being themed like the ninja place, they get a mixed bag of reviews and no doubt someone will pop up and scream 'tourist trap!. I still say go for it, it’s more about the experience than the food in places like this.

Suggested these a few hours ago on another ost

For different experiences,go to Jing Fong during the week. It is dim sum and you just point as the carts are pushed around what you want to eat and they stamp a card. It will be the cheapest meal you will have in NYC. It is a zoo on the weekends.

Go to Katz's where you get an old-fashioned ticket which is marked according to what you eat. Let her "bribe" the sandwich make for $1 for a taste and extra thick sandwich.

Across the street is Il Laboratorio de Gelato, wonderful gelati. Other wonderful store made ice cream places include Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, Sundaes and Cones on East 10, and Cones on Bleecker.

For pizza, you can go Lombardi's and ask to see how the ovens workza is excellent. Across the street is Rice to Riches, just various rice puddings.

And Veniero's for the best inexpensive Italian pastries.

And Pommes Frites on 2nd Ave. That is all they sell and kids love, love, love this place.
