Bookstores in New York and Brooklyn

Can anyone recommend some good bookstores in Manhattan and / or Brooklyn? I'm not looking for a particular genre of books, I just love browsing in interesting bookstores ... I think that the big chain is Barnes and Noble, so suggestions as to the most comprehensive of their stores would be welcomed, but also maybe something a little quirky? Could be second hand?

I liked the Barnes and Noble at Union Square. Good selection and in a very nice area that is well worth exploring in its own right too.

Strand Bookstore (on Broadway and 12 Street).

Strand bookstore - huge! New and 2nd hand. Also has a rare book section.

The Mysterious Bookstore - specialising in crime and espionage

Drama Bookstore - specialises in things to do with the dramatic arts

Also don't discount books in gift stores in places like The Met, Guggienham, United Nations and many of the museums.

Agree that the Barnes & Noble in Union Square is a good one (with good sales help) and that area is a great shopping mecca anyway with an H & M, Sephora, Nordstrom Rack, DSW for shoes etc. The Strand is not far from it either. ;) Then there's old school Shakespeare & Co.

I like the Strand-they have tons of shelves outside with used books dirt cheap. You do need to spend some time browsing as nothings organized but that's the adventure. I've found used travel guides for $1-2 there, usually a only a few years old.

The B & N in Union Square is only a 5 minute away, so you could check that out as well.

You can spend hours in the STRAND bookstore - B&N's are pretty much cookie cutter some better than others - as mentioned.

Staff makes a store and the STRAND book people are at the top of their game!!

The Strand is a must-see. Also try McNally Jackson (52 Prince Street) if you are going to Nolita/Soho. Enjoy!
