Times Square is not really where local people go for good food and certainly not for an inexpensive meal. Times Square is one of the most touristy parts of town and most places do business on volume and high prices rather than high quality and repeat business. There are some decent places but not particularly inexpensive.

You'll find there are better restaurants if you walk west toward Ninth Avenue.

It sure would help if you told us what you had in mind for dinner - Italian? Seafood? Pizza? Chinese? Burgers? In a city with quite possibly the highest volume of restaurants, simply saying "place to eat - not far and not expensive" is rather broad. What do you consider "not expensive?"

There are many fine choices on 9th Avenue.

I think what visitors either don't understand or afraisd to do is take the subway just a few stops for a greater selection of food and prices.

A surprising place to eat is Bella Vita on 43rd. & 7th. They really have great slices, with fresh mozzarella. THeir sit down food is actually pretty good. About $20 for an entree.

There is a little Chinese dive called Weng's Palace on 40th west of 8th Ave that is actually very good. It looks like a nothing place but it's really pretty good. It's not excellent but considering price and speed it's really really decent.

On the other side of 8th Avenue is a place called Boi Food. It's next to the Popeye's. They mostly do lunch. It's Vietnamese. Probably some of the best Vietnamese in Manhattan. But it's hard to find good Vietnamese in Manhattan.

Best of luck.
