8 hour stop over any ideas

Hey folks

Flying to US to see family on the 27th of December.

We have an 8 hour stop over in JFK.

What would you folk suggest for a whistle stop tour of the Big apple.

We are a family of 5 eldest is 18 and youngest is 11.

Any advice would be great .

Thanks

It might not be 8 hours when you factor in getting to and from the airport. What time does your flight arrive and when does the next one leave?

The first thing is to determine if you really have 8 hours to spend outside the airport...

Is it correct to assume you are arriving on an international flight from Ireland (Will you pre-clear customs in Ireland?) and are departing on a domestic flight? (And what time of day/afternoon/evening?)

How much time does your airline suggest/require for check in / security for the second flight?

Is your luggage checked onward for your on your next flight or will you have to pick it up (at customs?) and recheck?

Even with 8 hours, you will most likely spend an hour or more each way getting into Manhattan, and will have to prioritize. What 2 or 3 things do you want to see most?

First you need to go on the website of the JFK to ? airline and see how early they want you checking in. Then you need to factor at least 30-60 minutes from the time the plane lands until you are on your way. ( I've waited that long for people to come out--and they had luggage checked through to final destination) You may only have 6-7 hours, which IS still enough to go into Manhattan.

BUT, how about sharing what you want to see. Then we can help you winnow your list and make a logical plan.

You might be able to take the Airtrain then the A train (subway) to High Street Brooklyn. Take in the view and walk around a bit, etc.

Directions for walking to Brooklyn Bridge here: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k866178-…

As time permits walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and walk down to Battery Park to see the Harbor, Statue of Liberty, etc. If running out of time, take the A train back to the airport.

If you have time left, perhaps take a subway up to Times Square to look around a bit, then jump the A train back to the airport.

You will want to be aware of the location of the A train stops, for a more straightforward trip back to the airport. Subway map here: http://www.mta.info/maps/submap.html

The train ride will take about an hour, so you will have to keep an eye on the clock.
