When they morph into some other kind of sales. Bottom line, there is always a sale going on--the name just changes. Rarely do people pay "full price" and full price has become somewhat of an oxymoronic term.

Macy's is constantly advertising sales on TV. They usually seem to happen on the weekends but they'll have a preview sale on Friday.

Generally speaking you'll always find a sale going on. Macy's is great for its sales. In winter after Christmas and into Jan-Feb, you can get amazing deals on things like winter coats and leather boots. The selection isn't as good but you can get amazing prices as the stores are tying to clear out the stock for the next season. This is true going into the fall too. That's when you can get summer styles at a steal. But really all the time they are running different specials. Not to worry.

Many stores have sales after Christmas. They aren't necessarily "New Year Sales".

There is no standard timeline for when post holiday sales end for all stores. These are primarily clearance sales of unsold items (although right after Christmas-- it wouldn't surprise me if they brought in additional merchandise to sell for "day after Christmas" as it's the second busiest shopping day of the year in the U.S.).

Discounts tend to go deeper and deeper as January progresses, but inventory drops as it is sold off, so it takes a bit of luck to find items you like, in the size you need, that nobody else wanted. Sometimes great things get returned post-xmas and put back on the racks at a discount, but again, that takes some luck.

Some clothing will stay full-priced until spring approaches. Not everything is immediately discounted after the holidays.

Good time to buy coats and gloves that didn't find good homes in the last season.

I get my coats and boots in Jan-Feb. That's the time to get really good stuff marked way down.
