Any tips to a single mum bringing a 9yr old boy to NYC

Hi,

Sorry to be a pain with yet another question but everyone has been so helpful.

Anyway I travelling to NYC with my son in August which we are so excited about. I have been before but not alone nor with my son. To be honest first time I came I was so overwhelmed by everything I found it hard to take it all in.

Anyway as I said we are going in August for 6days and plan on doing certain things ie Statue of liberty and Ellis island (as was closed on previous visit) Empire state building (as didn't do last time)

Top of the rock, central park, world trade site and times square.

I have checked out prices on line so have an idea about cost but can anyone offer any advice on we anything haha

I would appreciate any tips regarding: travelling with a child, what there is for a young boy, places or interest I may not of heard of, good family restaurants, great places to shop with a child, clothing, spending money for both of us etc etc etc

We have booked to stay mid town west 34th so good location .

I was also wondering if anyone could advise me on where to shop boho and craftie hand made goods etc ie jewellry , paintings etc

Thank you so much and sorry to ask so many questions, as I said I would really appreciate ANY advice, tips or help :)

thanks and HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

All the ideas you mention are good. Be prepared to spend time in Times Square. Kids love the candy-themed stores, the toy store and all the activity.

Central Park Zoo is another favorite. ---The Central Park Zoo was featured in the children's book Mr. Popper's Penguins and in J.D. Salinger's classic novel The Catcher in the Rye. The zoo was also featured in the animated films Madagascar, The Wild, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, as well as in the animated series The Penguins of Madagascar. Home Alone 2 Lost in NY is another pre-visit movie idea.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is fun too.

Be flexible in scheduling because kids can get overtired and overstimulated with all the new sights. Sometimes you need an unscheduled rest....

- American Museum of Natural History - dinosaurs! And lots of other stuff related to animals and nature.

- The Metropolitan Museum of Art - it's not just art. Ancient Egypt, arms and amour, totem poles, etc.

Don't try to do them both in the same day. If you can do just one, I'd suggest AMNH.

Though some dates will be more expensive than others, hotels generally have good sale rates for summer. It will be too early to see all of your options and all of the discount prices. Hopefully you've booked something that can be canceled without a fee.

I know I am a broken record - but, do yourself a favor and get a good guidebook and a map of the city; there is so much more to see/explore than the usual popular sites (all of which are fine but there are many other options that you and your son may find interesting). The guidebook will also include the history of the sites you are seeing - between the book and the forum and any other online research you do based on your interests, you should come up with a great plan for the two of you.

If just using the forums and places you have "heard" about, you can end up missing out on some special spots you both may love.

This is a relatively recent thread about safety and kids in NYC that might be of interest to you. tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k6762705…

For unique indie designers and crafts, consider a trip to the Brooklyn Flea http://www.brooklynflea.com/ (Location varies by season/date)

If you wish to climb to the crown at the SOL, book your tickets as soon as they become available. Crown access is very limited and tends to sell out well in advance. Purchase ONLY from this official ticket seller http://www.statuecruises.com/ (Right now only tickets through May are on sale, so keep checking to see when August tickets go on sale.)

I think most boys will enjoy

American Museum of Natural History http://www.amnh.org/ Dinosaurs, planetarium, etc.

Intrepid Sea Air and Space Museum http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/ Aircraft carrier, planes and a space shuttle

Tenement Museum http://www.tenement.org/

Roosevelt Island Tram (fare included in Metrocard which pays for subway/buses) http://rioc.ny.gov/tramtransportation.htm

Staten Island Ferry ride (free)

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge (free)

Transit Museum http://www.mta.info/mta/museum/

Forbidden Planet (comic book store) http://www.fpnyc.com/

O my word,

Thank you all soooo much for all the info. Its truly appreciated. Just read through the ideas with my son and he can't wait. I didn't think of half the places mentioned and thank you massively for all the links.

I have heard really negative reviews regarding the Natural history museum so wasn't sure whether to go.

Love the thought of the MOM too and central park zoo which for some reason never thought of. Is the central park zoo aimed and just really young children or everyone at every age?

The references to the films were a big help when explaining places to me son, so thank you for that too.

Which guide books would you recommend? I have a few saved on Amazon but until they arrive I'm not sure how good they'll be.

How easy are the markets usually to get to? they certainly sound perfect as I love a good market where I can buy something with history and unique.

My son was also wanting to do a cruise, does anyone know anything regarding them or the ferries?

Thank you again to you all, you have given me lots to think about and plan :)

Warm wishes,

Maria x

The CP Zoo is smallish but enjoyable. Partly depends if he has an enthusiasm for any particular type of animals they have on display. http://www.centralparkzoo.com/ (Bronx Zoo is great, but don't think you have time for it on this trip.)

I quite like the AMNH, but think it partly depends on when you go. It can get hectic with school or summer camp groups on some days. It is large, so check out the floor plan to get oriented and find your way to the specific things you might want to see. (Seeing "everything" is unrealistic.) The planetarium shows, while a bit pricey, are great, esp. if he's never seen one.

Brooklyn Flea is easy to get to by subway. Directions on there website depending on which day / location you go to. There are also various street fairs and markets around town, but it's a bit early to know the full 2014 schedule. socialeyesnyc.com/manhattan/…

There are Circle Line does various cruises, including one goes all the way around Manhattan. The boat dock is next to the Intrepid Museum. circleline42.com/new-york-cruises/home.aspx

Not sure about specific guide book to recommend, but a good map (paper or google) is a necessity IMO. You can start off with the subway map, which can be printed as a PDF.

I forgot to mention model boat sailing in CP: centralparknyc.org/visit/things-to-do/sports… (rentals available)

The Staten Island Ferry is free and who knows what state the lighthouse museum will be in by the time you get here. http://lighthousemuseum.org

ditto to all above especially The Intrepid and don't forget the Public Library at 42nd Street.

Definitely go to the American Museum of Natural History. It can get crowded, but for good reason - it has some of the world's best overall Dinosaur fossil and wildlife diorama exhibits in the world. I would advise going on a weekday if possible and heading to the dinosaur halls first thing to beat the crowds. Do keep in mind that it is a very old building so is not layed out as neatly as more modern museums, and that's the negative aspect I suspect you've read about.

If you don't mind leaving Manhattan, you might want to try the Bronx Zoo or a ball game at Yankee Stadium if you can get tickets.
