14 Days in NYC with a toddler

Hi we are planning on 14 nights in New York City from 2nd week of May 2014 . We are a couple with a 13 month old baby. I've seen a few itineraries on trip advisor but I couldn't find anything for over 5 days. We are also thinking about taking a 3-4 days tour to Niagara & Washington during our stay. Could you please suggest some itinerary for 8 days so we can spend rest of the days for shopping and other stuffs... Also, we need some help finding a moderately cheaper accommodation / vacation rentals (no sharing). I checked some sites like Homeaway.com & vrbo.com and found some apartments that are bit cheaper than hotels however, they are located at least 30 mins away from Downtown, also not sure how legitimate they are. We stayed in Park Central during last visit to NYC in 2012 (4 days) and found it so convenient however, this time we can't afford to stay in the same place as we are staying longer...Pls suggest some reasonably priced accommodation within Manhattan that is family-friendly and close to Subway station. Thanks in advance

I'm sure the locals will be along to give you suggestions for apartmenthotels but you need to define in US dollars what "reasonably priced" is to you.

Apt rentals in NYC for less than 30 days are illegal. That includes the ones listed here on TA and airbnb.

For starters read here:

For clarification:

1. Are your dates May 8-16?

2. You wrote the Park Central rates are not affordable. The Park Central rates during your dates would run approximately $415/nt + tax, or about $500/nt with tax. You want to pay less, but could you be more specific on your hotel budget including taxes?.

3.. What children's activities would you like, and what non-child NYC sights/experiences interest you? Animals and the zoo? Puppets? Central Park? Toy stores?

4. You want "convenient". Does that mean in the same or nearby neighborhood as the Park Central? Does it mean in Manhattan and near 1 or more subway lines?

5. What kind of shopping do you want to do?

6. Your guidebook will have map pictures. They can be very helpful.

Hi

thanks for the quick response.

1. We will arrive NYC on 12th May 9.30 PM and depart on 27th May 5 PM. We might take the Niagara trip 3 days in between.

2. Our Max budget is $2200 USD for accommodation in NYC, Basically we are looking for 12 nights if its a hotel (we will put our luggage in storage during our 3 day trip) or 14 nights if its an apartment so we can leave our bags while we are away from NY. All we need is a decent family room with Private bathroom and a kitchenette in a safe locality....

3. We definitely wants to visit the Central Park, Zoo or any aquariums as such... planning to go to M&M in Time Square, Toys r us and Disney Store.... I am not aware of any other places that can entertain a toddler. We still would like to cover the major attractions like Empire State, Statue of Liberty, china town, just one or two museums etc etc...

4. We would like to do more toys and dress shopping at Macy's, & toys r us... so prefer an accommodation not too far away from Time Square and close to subway stations as we may have to carry the stroller most often. During our last trip, we stayed very close to Time Square, so we walked back to the room with all our shoppings.

Thanks again

<<14 nights if its an apartment so we can leave our bags while we are away from NY.>>

I see my link about apartment being illegal in NYC didn't take. Sorry, here it is again:

Again, apartment rentals for less than 30 days are almost all illegal in NYC. You're looking for apartment style hotels.

You might also look into the homey atmosphere of a Bed and Breakfast. They tend to be cheaper than hotels, and you'll be able to do things like warm up the baby's bottle. bedandbreakfast.com/manhattan-new-york.html

There are tons of things to do with small children in New York. Take a look at Mommypoppins for some ideas. http://mommypoppins.com

People are very helpful to parents with strollers when entering and leaving the subways and buses. Traveling shouldn't be a problem, so you don't have to stay in Times Square.

NYC has lots of toy stores. Here are six of the best of them. …cbslocal.com/top-lists/…

Here's a list of places where you can eat out, and feel comfy with your toddler: mommypoppins.com/family/nyc-kid-friendly-res…

You need to get Googling and do a bit of research as there is a lot of information about travelling with kids of all ages on various websites and blogs.

Start by looking at these websites:

You should also look at the various links under the Top Questions on the right hand side of this forum. You cannot see them on a smart phone. Here are the best ones for you:

B&B's are sometimes NOT cheaper than hotels and some are not operating legally in any event

1. If a B&B is lawful, it might not host very small children.

2. Your budget of 2200/12 = $185 per night after tax, or about $155 pre-tax. While not in Manhattan, the Country Inn and Suites in Long Island City has a complimentary breakfast, is viewed favorably by numerous Forum contributors, and an Executive King on Priceline would be within your budget.

While over your budget, you might consider the Hotel Newton in Manhattan.
