Bus (Greyhound) or Train: Washington DC to New York??

Need your opinion and help:

Which mode of transportation is better considering the following givens:

1. travelling with my wife and 2 kids (10 and 4 years old)

2. travelling at night (10pm onwards)

3. travelling with at least 2 luggage

Other queries:

1. Safety wise - which is "safer" (safe from undesirable and loud people)?

2. Which is "roomy" or spacious?

Thanks

I prefer Amtrak.

It is faster and reliable than bus, especially during inclement weathers or holidays.

Amtrak is very safe and even has quiet cars. It is much more spacious than bus and will be perfect to travel with your kids.

Why do you have to travel so late at night? Arriving in DC at 1 am doesn't sound like much fun. Where are you staying in DC? Do you know how far it is from the train station?

Agree about Amtrak. Do you want to leave Washington after 10 p.m? There's a 10:10 p.m. train, which is the slowest run on the line since it's the one that also transports checked baggage (which you really have no reason to use.) It takes 3 hours, 40 minutes. The next Washington departure isn't until 3:15 in the morning.

Amtrak without a doubt. If you book as soon as you know your dates, it doesn't have to be expensive. Just know that Amtrak works like an airline here in terms of pricing - the more seats are booked, the higher the fares go.

Amtrak

2. Which is "roomy" or spacious?

Amtrak. The buses are EXTREMELY cramped and by extremely cramped I mean CRAMPED.

Amtrak is comfortable, safe, and much roomier than a bus.

Train is much nicer. Roomier. Quieter crowd, typically. Costs much more, but is much nicer.

Buses are a lot cheaper. Crowded.

The Port Authority is much sketchier than Penn Station.

If you can afford the train, it's much nicer.

One other consideration. If there's a problem on the tracks ahead, your stuck on the train (it happened to me). On the bus, once you get around a traffic jam you can keep going.
