Definitely take the JFK AirTrain and the subway - it is faster and much more economical. It is very easy.

The Salisbury Hotel is at 123 West. 57th Street - steps from the F train at 57th St. / 6th Avenue but also very close to the E train at 53rd Street / 7th Avenue.

The $25. JFK AirTrain 10-trip MetroCard would be excellent for your family if you plan to travel roundtrip by rail (which is the smart thing to do).

The $25. card is a 10 trip JFK AirTrain only MetroCard.

Otherwise, the JFK AirTrain is always $5.00 per person regardless of whether you have an unlimited ride MetroCard for the buses and subway.

Then you simply follow the very clearly marked signs to the NYC Subway - the E train. You'll take a Manhattan bound E train in the direction of World Trade Center and get off at 7th Avenue / 53rd Street. The E trains have displays telling you all the upcoming stations - very good signage and announcements. You walk up 7th Avenue (against the direction of vehicular traffic) and take a right on 57th Street and you'll see your hotel.

Alternatively, you can step off the E train at the Kew Gardens or Forest Hills station and wait for the F train to follow the E train. On weekdays, the F train will follow the E train on the adjacent track at Kew Gardens and then on the same track at Forest Hills. If you choose the option of switching from the E to the F train, I recommend Forest Hills because it is difficult to screw up boarding the next train to follow the train you were on on the same track - kinda hard to get confused there.

You'd get off the F train at 57th St. / 6th Avenue and be right outside your hotel (practically)

Thanks for all the detail. Any idea how long it would take taking the E train as it might be easier with bags etc to just stay on one train.

Less than an hour, and I wouldn't worry about having problems changing trains, it is as easy as Moreffmiles said! You literally get off the E, stand where you get off and wait for an F train, no stairs to contend with, and you'll be closer to your hotel.

The whole trip will take under an hour and will be faster than a taxi.

Seriously, at Forest Hills you simply step off the E train and stand exactly where you stepped off the train. You don't go anywhere. The F train will likely follow within 90 seconds to three minutes (most).

This is extremely easy and very well-marked. I think you'll be very impressed with the signage. We've got digital displays and very audible announcements. New York City gets over 50 million visitors a year and a lot from South America, Asia, and across the European continent. Millions of visitors who either speak no English or little English and they navigate the subways. English is your first language - don't stress yourself - you can always ask a friendly local person if you have a query.

I totally agree, it's the most comfortable train change ever, don't let the idea of a transfer stop you
