Others may have some suggestions in that area, but if you're really interested in the boutique shopping experience you have to go elsewhere--the village, chelsea, soho, tribeca, williamsburg brooklyn all spring to mind as much better options, and all are easily accessible by subway from your hotel.

The Garment District is good for those who want fabric, buttons, beads, trims and other "clothing parts". For finished clothing the places that sell to the public mostly have lower end stuff.

Otherwise it depends on your taste and budget.

There aren't many boutiques or bigger stores in that area. 10th ave. is very far west and until recently was nothing but warehouses and car dealerships with a diner or two mixed in. What's there now are some restaurants and newer hotels and apartment buildings.

For boutique shopping, I'd head to Madison Avenue above 57th, to the Village or Soho. The garment district is really more for manufacturing and directed to the trade. If you want something cutting edge, trendy and hip head to the new Dover Street Market on Lexington and 30th. http://newyork.doverstreetmarket.com/

It is the current scene for "fashionistas".

Thank you, We planned to hit the Village but wanted to check to see if anything had moved into Midtown west in the last 2 years. We also are going to the Hell's Kitchen flea market Saturday morning.

I guess I should have stated that I am interested in fabric and trims and my 21 year old daughter is the fashonista but on a college budget!

If she wants some Indie stuff, consider a visit to the Brooklyn flea http://www.brooklynflea.com/

If you will be in the city in February and have some time you should head to the Brooklyn Museum to see the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition. Your daughter would love it if she is a fashionista.

It's easy to get there on the subway (1,2,3 lines) and the station is right outside the museum.

For fabrics and trim, you are fine to in the garment district. To see real fashion and style, elsewhere. She should go see the JPGaultier exhibit if it is around when you are there. Visit Barney's as well.
