Statue of Liberty and 9/11 memorial

Hi

Just starting to plan our New York trip for April and am planning to do the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island and the 9/11 memorial in the same day, but wanted some advice before I do any bookings:

We are staying on 5th Avenue, near Bryant Park and the library - approx how long will it take to get to Battery Park on the subway?

How far is the 9/11 memorial from the ferry at Battery Park?

Are there any child friendly restaurants near Battery Park/9/11Memorial?

Is there any other places of interest near Battery Park (that may suit an 8 year old - who loves sight-seeing, sports and generally letting off steam)

Many thanks

maps,google.com is very helpful for subway and walking directions, with time estimates. Bring up Manhattan, then type in your destination (by name usually sufficient), select "Directions" then type your starting point. Hit the train icon for subway directions.

Get used to using this now as it will be very useful for other trip planning during your visit.

Lots of people also opt to see Wall Street when doing SOL and 911 memorial. Battery Park itself is also interesting.

Exploring Chinatown might also be a good fit (after 911 memorial)

Directly across from 9/11 memorial there is a marina and offices.,(down Liberty street). There is an outdoor eating area with a selection of food sellers( in the summer any way) and I remember there were food options inside as well. Sitting outdoors with the marina in view might work well. It's not a restaurant but a child friendly place to have something to eat although it's aimed at office staff. You pass a small shop just before you enter the park area, which sells nice fruit and sandwiches too.

There is a shake Shack on Murray Street not far north of the memorial.

HopStop.com is a great site that will tell you exactly how long the subway ride is.

Definitely go into the church near 9/11. They have done a really nice job with it.

The marina that lassie refers to is at Brookfield Place (formerly the World Financial Center) and is currently undergoing a major renovation. Right now it is mostly closed, with narrow passageways thru the building, and a very limited choice of lunch spots in out of the way places. It's hard to say whether that will change by the time of your trip as there's been very little visible progress and it's way behind schedule--there's still a sign that says "coming in 2013." So check back closer to your trip to see what's happened by then.

On Battery Place across from the north side of Battery Park is Amish Market. There is a historical building on the edge of Battery Park that may be open by then with a food establishment which we're hoping will be a terrific place to eat but again you will have to check back to see if it's open by then.

There is a big burger place in the Marriott hotel that is across the street from the memorial gift shop, and many places in the neighborhood that you can check on your way there. One block south of the entrance is George's diner. There's a panini place on Zuccotti Park, and pizza and fast-food places all over.
