Accommodation in New York City

My husband and I plan to spend 5 days in NYC 30 Sept to 6 Oct 2014. We want to find good clean hotel accommodation which is on the hop on hop off bus route and if possible near Times Square. Is it possible to do this at $200 pn or less?

Firstly, the HOHO is not transportation so proximity to that shouldn't be as important as proximity to the Subway.

Secondly, September can be expensive, and $200 is a small budget, can't this go any bigger?

I'd personally look at places in Long Island City, such as the Country Inn & Suites, and book something cancellable that fits, and keep looking, but you may struggle, with the low budget.

With a budget that small - September / October can be one of the most expensive time to visit NYC and taxes make up about 15% of a hotel room cost - you can't be picky about location.

The subway is fantastic, so anywhere close to a subway station will be fine to get around. As above, if you can't increase your budget you should start looking at places such as Long Island City (NOT Long Island) which is just outside of Manhattan but a fair bit cheaper and still connected quickly and easily via subway.

Try looking at the London agency www.apartments2book.com - they have contracts with a lot of apartment style hotels and sometimes can offer cheaper rates

FatherDownUnder, you should start your own thread with your question rather than "hijacking" this thread :-) Use the yellow "ask a question" button.

12Lois61, there are some affordable and convenient areas to stay in NYC that are a quick subway ride from Manhattan. Long Island City (a neighborhood in Queens) has a number of more affordable hotels that are convenient to the subway. Not all LIC hotels are well-located, so check with the forum first. That location makes sense if you are flying into JFK, but makes less sense if you are using EWR airport.
