Accommodation for family of 5 in NYC

Hello,

I've just discovered that it's illegal to rent a 'vacation apartment' in NYC for < 30 days. We are a family of 5 (3 kids aged 5, 9 and 11 years) and will be in NYC for five nights, arriving April 11 and leaving April 16th. We would like to stay in mid-town if possible. Does anyone have suggestions about hotels that have a bit more of an apartment feel to them, without being incredibly expensive?

Are there any circumstances in which it is legal to rent an apartment for a short period?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

Vanessa.

There are some vacation apartment rentals that are legal (e.g. the building owner renting out a unit in a their own small residence), but it's nearly impossible to figure out which ones may be legit.

The good news is that there are a good number of apartment style hotels. To start, check out the various apartment style hotels at Affinia.com Also check RadioCityApts.com and NYCSalisbury.com. Also check pricing for Doubletree Suites Times Square.

There are some Manhattan options outside of midtown as well, but still convenient to quite a few "attractions" (which are spread out) and in interesting neighborhoods.

One of the most recommended apartment style family hotel is Beacon Hotel. It's in the Upper West Side but reasonably convenient to midtown (walkable if you enjoy walking, or a quick subway ride). UWS is a preferred neighborhood for many, but there are other great Manhattan neighborhoods. Like all hotels, prices fluctuate, but during high demand family times, this hotel can be a bit pricier than some of the other options.

If none of these seem like great options, include budget and you may get some additional suggestions, and they can be more specific to your needs.

Thank you for these helpful suggestions. Does anyone know if the properties listed under 'Vacation Rentals' on the Trip Advisor NYC site are legal?

No, they are generally not legal. (Tripadvisor does not vet each listing or each city's laws. They generate revenue just as classifieds generate revenue but don't check the validity of the jousting sticks or whatever is for sale.)

No, they're not.

Radiocityapartments.com

Nycsalsibury.com

Affinia.com

Are some legal apt hotels that can sleep 5.
