Safe, convenient, clean and affordable hotel?

This is our first visit to New York. My husband, I and 2 teenage daughters (who are happy to share a bed, perhaps not a sofa bed, also happy to be all in one room). We have not researched anything yet but will be hoping to do SOL, 9/11, ESB, +/- NBC studio and Radio City and a Broadway show. We are going July 29 to Aug 2nd. We are looking for a reasonably priced (around US $800 for 4 nights), clean and comfortable hotel, that is convenient to either subway network or central area.HELP!

You may wish to consider, on Quikbook, the Cosmopolitan (Downtown), $202/nt (with 14.75% tax and fees, $237/nt)

That's budget is a bit low, but not entirely impossible.

For Manhattan hotels already listing somewhat near your budget (it's early to see summer sales), The Milburn Hotel is available for $199. A room with two double beds (smaller than queen beds) and a kitchenette and incl breakfast. That's on Kayak.com, but may also be on the hotel's own website. That does NOT include tax, which will add ~15%.

For a bit more, a better choice would be the Salisbury. On their own website, there is a book direct rate of $206 (plus tax), no prepay, cancelable up to 48 hrs prior. That's only if the kids are 15 or younger. Two double beds and most rooms have small kitchenette. If the kids are over 15, it's more expensive. http://www.nycsalisbury.com/

Hotels in Long Island City (a neighborhood in Queens) are a good choice for more affordable lodging. Before we get to far into that, if your budget was somewhat arbitrary, reconsider whether you can increase it if you want to stay in Manhattan. There are a lot more options for a budget of ~$240-250 (plus tax).

Also keep in mind that some good deals could come up a month or two prior to travel time (so book something that can be canceled so you can keep watching)
