Book now for a hotel in May or wait?

My son and his soon to be wife will be staying in New York for 4 nights from 7th May. Should they book accomodation now or are they better off waiting until closer to the date?

They have a budget of up to $300 per night and are hoping to stay in the midtown area. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I think the consensus will be to book a cancelable rate now that you're happy with and then keep an eye out for better deals.

Agreed , book the one youve chosen now, i booked the aria in vegas for may about 4 months ago, kept checking there site, noticed a reduced rate, so i cancelled , rebooked and now im $240 better off, same applies in all cities ;-) tripadvisor accomodation rankings really helped me last year and even more so this year.

You might wish to consider the Murray Hill East Suites, refundable King, $1165 including tax; confirm any renovations are complete.. .

Although over budget, the Intercontinental Barclay has a refundable Queen, with tax, for $1,295.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies. Booking a room that has free cancellation definitely seems a good idea.

Prices for those dates are quite high. Keep in mind taxes add ~15% to prices you see listed on US websites (including the hotels' own). Murray Hill East Suites is very tired and not at all what I would suggest for a honeymoon. The Tryp is much newer and a younger feeling property. I see a cancelable rate of $299/night plus tax on several websites. I also wouldn't be so worried about being in midtown. Not everything they'll want to see/do is located there. I'd pick the hotel they like best within their budget. The Marlton in Greenwich Village is new and trendy and is $295 plus tax for a queen bed room fully cancleable on Priceline (and elsewhere). The Wyndham Garden Chinatown is also a great new hotel and within their budget.

travelzoo.com

is one place to check for sales/specials closer to their trip.

I've got a room pre-reserved for my upcoming May visit that's cancellable as noted by all the others. I will probably try Priceline's Name Your Own Price bidding when it gets closer to see if I can get either a better rate or location or both, but for a first time trip, you might be better off getting a known quantity.
